VFW State Convention

I just returned from the VFW State Convention.
Our State/Dept. has voted to accept a Men's auxiliary in the posts of our State, if they want one.
I am a bit miffed with this because we women have only been allowed in the VFW as Vets since 1978 & are fully accepted as a Comrade along with the men; whereas if I were married, my Husband would not be accepted into the auxiliary with the wives & Daughters.
Boy are we behind the times! I only hope I can change this with being an active officer and recruiting more women! That is how it will need to go to change these old perceptions.

More Movies

This weekend I saw:
AVP-not so great though it was nice to see a strong female role.
Bad Santa-Hysterical and nice ending.
The Day After Tomorrow-Fantastic and much better than I had expected!
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow-Terrific entertainment! Great Comic Book story! Loved this movie!

Midweek Movie Review

I got a chance to see:
'Birth' with Nicole Kidman & Lauran Bacall,
'Hotel Rwanda' with Don Cheadle &
'Napoleon Dynamite.'
Birth was very strange, how can you deal with a story of a Ten year old boy who says he is your dead husband come back! WOW! All I can say is this movie REALLY makes you think! If you are an entertainment only person then don't see it because it will make your mind function!
Hotel Rwanda was every bit as good and frightening as advertised! Too bad they couldn't give out two Oscars on a tie last year!
Napoleon Dynamite was just a silly fun flik about Geeks and Losers in High School! And they win in the end! Fun entertainment!

Flag Day

Today we celebrate the Birth of our Nations Flag!
My VFW Post has a Flag presentation we do at one of the local schools for all the fifth graders.
I see it as a nice conclusion to the school academic year and a way to celebrate our flag.
It is enjoyable to see how many of these young students know about our flag!
Many knew the hard questions we put to them about how many stripes did the last one have before they chose to revert back to only thriteen & that you should stand and put your hand over your heart when a color guard passes in a parade.
We also are the Color guard for our 4th of July town parade so it is nice to have them ready and they all do stand up for it!

Take Time To Smell The Roses

I have realized one of the worst things about our American culture is we are always rushing somewhere.
I don't intend to rush myself to the grave, I am taking time to enjoy a sunset and watch birds feeding in my bird feeder and especially just to smell the roses.
Enjoy your life everyday!
Stop for a moment and take in the world around you!

The Sweet Smell of Roses

My roses are blooming and lately I have had enough to cut and have a vase full of them to enjoy in the house!
I love going by the vase and breathing in a nice smeel of them!
How I do love my roses!

Summer Whoes are at Hand Soon

The Summer is coming and it brings with it the end of the school year!
Soon my neighborhood kids will be out of school and terrorizing the neighborhood!
Why is it people have kids and yet do nothing to educate them and aid in a positive upbringing of these children!
I caught two throwing pinecone at eachother and told them to stop and find something else more constructive to do and one actually said he had nothing else to do! How said!

My GameGirl

Of course GameGirl! You wouldn't think I would call it GameBoy just because everyone else does!
I miss my GameGirl! Been reading so much lately that I really haven't had time to sit down for even a quick game.
They certainly do bring joy into the Day though!

iPod Woes

Maybe someone can tell me...I thought the iPod would re-charge if you attached the plug-in charging plug while listening to it!
Mine showed the battery icon charging, yet the iPod died on me mid-song!
Of course I had been listening to it ALL day!
Funny, now that I am not listening to it and making certain it is charging...it is so quiet in my house, except for the ticking of my clock!

Book Review

I just finished Goldie Hawn's 'A Lotus Grows In The Mud.'
I loved it!
Her book is broken into chapters that encapsulate a theme such as death or joy.
It reminds me of Dr. Maya Angelou's book 'Wouldn't take Nothing for my Journey Now!'
Goldie's story is filled with her growing up, family life & all the things Goldie.
Even if you never cared for her acting or laughed at & with her on 'Laugh-In' you will find a heart warming lovable person who cares very much about this world and the people in it.

Weekend Movie Review

This weekend I had the chance to see:
De-Lovely, Paycheck & Closer.
De-Lovely was great! For anyone who enjoys a good musical! I really loved how they utilized some of our favorite singers of today, such as Alanis Morrisette and Sheryl Crow & my all time favorite Jazz singer Diana Krall, as the lead singers in Porter's Broadway productions of the time.
The costumes and sets were lovely and with my favorite singers I could see myself enjoying a second viewing.
Paycheck was barely believable, but action packed and for me, if you add a motorcycle I will definitely enjoy it!
Closer was....Weird! I didn't like how Mike Nichols allowed it to portray women as men's sex pawns.
For someone who was in construction with men and now a Retired Sailor, they actually got even me sick of the foul sex language!
All I saw in this film was four sexually disfunctional people whose lives crossed.
I suppose Julia Roberts needed the money after having twins and maybe Clive Owne and Natalie Portman and Jude Law all have mortgages to pay, because the only thing that makes the box office draw on this film are the names of the actors!
What a waste of good film!

Square vs Round Catfood Dishes

It may sound crazy to some, but there is a big difference!
I have been using a square dish for my little four-legged roommate and yet when she gets down to the last bits of food she cannot get the food in the corners!
I'd been planning on replacing the square one with a round one when just today I was under my kitchen sink to get at the hummingbird food to refill the outside decanter, when I came upon a round dish I had way back in there!
I replaced her dish and she is much happier and able to get at all her food without me having to finger the tidbits out of the corners!

No Green Oatmeal!

That's right! I mowed today and because it hadn't rained for a couple of days, the grass wasn't drenched and I could mow normally!
It was a pleasure, though I found I had to stop quite often to empty the mulch bag, but considering the options, no big deal!

I Don't Need A Hearing Aid

This is good and yet bad.
I had my hearing tested, which hasn't for a couple of years and needs to be periodically due to the damage and hearing loss from my 2 near fatal vehicle accidents.
So the audiologist says I don't need a hearing aid, but that yes my hearing on my left ear is diminished, though mostly above and below the frequencies of normal speech.
She said my trouble is in crowded over noisy places, I will not be able to distinguish the sounds appropriately and that the loss in the left ear is significant enough that I cannot distinguish sound direction, which I have already realized! Yet another reason to look both ways when crossing a busy street!
So, though I don't need a hearing aid, I do have the debilitating problems of hearing loss and the embarrassing issue of having to fess up and apologize to people and ask them to repeat themselves.
So...As my Best Friend mentioned on another issue, We'll have to Play It By Ear! The good Right One that is!

My Diet Is Working!

I suppose I should call it my 'lifestyle' change!
Because this is working!
It has been 2 months and I have lost 17lbs and feel great!
This I can do!
I had been so worried that I couldn't lose the weight I had put on back in 2000, after my back surgery and yet here I am - better late than never!
I have my Best friend to thank as she is the one who shared her doctor's diet plan with me!
Thanks Cinders!
You have always been there for me!
I only hope I can reciprocate you loving care!

Bremerton Naval Base-Washington

I usually go up to McChord AFB to do my monthly grocery shopping, but this month I chose to go up to Bremerton. A bit further northwest. It was nice to be among the Navy once again!
Being retired Navy, I enjoyed being amongst 'my own kind!'
